Me yesterday at the end of Oyster Rocks Road (the Broadkill River) - by the way those are bullet holes in the "Dead End" sign probably made by some local Sussex County yahoo |
January and February are always the hardest months for me to get through each year. One reason I started my now annual tradition of vacationing in California in January was to punch a hole in those two dreary months. So far I've (we, me and Pat) have only stayed ten days. I would love to stay the whole two months but maybe two weeks is more reasonable. Both from an expense perspective and how long Pat can stand being with me. I do have a shelf life folks. Bill is the only person in the world who can (has) tolerated me for any length of time. And I fully admit I'm not easy to life with. Thank goodness I found Bill.
This Tuesday I have a day trip to Philly. The local "Old People's Express" (what I call the trips arranged by Sussex County Tech) was offering a "Day in Philadelphia" for $39.00 round trip. How could I refuse? I also signed up for a trip next month too! As regular readers of this blog know I worked and lived in Philadelphia for over a quarter of a century. I still miss it but I just couldn't afford to live in Pennsylvania anymore. Taxes too high.

Me with the Whiteheads entering Philadelphia last November during another "Day in Philadelphia" trip |
The bus leaves at 8 AM and I catch the bus back at 3 PM. The trip to Philly takes 2 1/2 hours so that gives me just about enough time to have lunch with my long-time friend and former co-worker Don McK. Always good to see Don, one of my few friends who is still in my life. Most of our friends have departed for . . . . where?

The bus drops us off at Independence Square in Philadelphia. I almost missed the bus going back because I couldn't find this location! |
Lately I've been thinking about where are they? Where is Ed Cage? Where is Wayne "The Cajun" Juneau? I'm pretty sure they are nowhere, just a big void which I'm sure is really pissing off Ed because he couldn't take any of his money with him (Ed was a real tightwad). Hopefully both of them are in a much better place and are enjoying eternal happiness. More likely they have been reborn as a dog or cat to learn a little humility. But I'm veering off in Twilight Zone Territory here folks so I'll get back on track.
One good thing about February is that the days are getting longer. Instead of darkness descending at 4:30 pm, now the sun doesn't set on the horizon until about 5:30 pm. I love it!
This month I go back on the Medical Treadmill again. I have an appointment with my dermatologist next Friday to remove an acitinic keratosis bump by my left eye. Every six months folks, I have to visit my dermatologist to check and remove (and sometimes get a biopsy) of these growths that keep popping out on my skin. Oh yes, I'm paying the price in my old age for my youthful folly of laying on the beach working on my tan.

Me at Herring Cove, Provincetown, Mass - 1976 - my Youthful Folly Days - by the way, the tan only lasted at week (at the most) |
The following week I have a followup visit with my cardiologist. Back on the treadmill folks. The good news folks is that my left leg, which I severely injured last year is 95% normal. It will probably never be totally back to what it was before but I can walk and I'm telling you folks, for that I will be forever thankful. Every morning before breakfast I walk the full length of the development where I live, strengthening my leg as well as trying to work off that extra ten pounds I gained (all around my waist) during my year long recovery.
More about my California trip tomorrow folks. You're not getting off that easy! (smile)
